Do you have electronic devices such as computers, printers, televisions, etc. that either no longer work, or you no longer want and you do not know what to do with them? You are in luck! There is now an ongoing electronics collection program for Fulton County residents!
In an effort to provide County residents with a convenient way to recycle their unwanted electronics, the Fulton County Recycling Program has established drop-off sheds for electronics. These sheds are located at the same sites where the current, single-stream recycling bins are located:
- beside the Bethel Township Municipal Building;
- beside the old Thompson Township Municipal Building;
- in front of the Forbes Road High School;
- in the parking lot of the Courthouse Annex II Building in McConnellsburg.
In 2010, the state legislation passed House Bill 708, referred to as the Covered Device Recycling Act, which requires the recycling of televisions, computers, monitors and peripheral devices and, beginning in 2013, bans the disposal of these items in landfills. Even if this Act did not exist, recycling electronics is the best way to handle unwanted electronics for our environment.
Please click on the attachment below for a list of the acceptable electronics items that can be dropped-off.
Computers: Before leaving a computer in the electronics drop-off shed, it is highly recommended that you erase or damage your hard drive to protect your personal information. The Fulton County Recycling Program does not take responsibility for any information that may be obtained from your hard drive when you leave a computer in the drop-off shed. M&M Electronics, located in the Penn Village Shopping Center in McConnellsburg, has agreed to help computer owners remove the hard drive from their computer. The hard drive can then be physically damaged and/or brought to the Fulton County Conservation District, where it will be safely stored until it is shipped for recycling. At the recycling facility, your hard drive is shredded and the metals are recycled.
Some very important guidelines to remember:
- Only electronic items may be placed in the drop-off sheds. No other material may be left in the sheds - no other recyclables and no garbage. Anyone found to be leaving material that is not on the “acceptable items” list, or anyone found to be taking electronics from the sheds, will be prosecuted.
- Please place electronics inside the shed. Do not leave items on the ground and do not place them in the single-stream recycling bin.
- Please do not leave electronics in boxes. If your electronics are in boxes, please remove them from the boxes and place the electronics in the shed. Flatten cardboard boxes and place them in the single-stream recycling bin.
- Please do not bring styrofoam. Styrofoam is not recyclable and may not be placed in either the electronics drop-off shed or in the single-stream recycling bin. Please take all styrofoam home with you and dispose of properly in the garbage.
It is important that these guidelines be followed or the electronics drop-off sheds will be removed.
Your County tax dollars are not paying for this service. It is a public service that provides you with a convenient way to recycle your electronics without having to leave the County. Please, be a responsible recycler! Keep the collection sites clean, recycle only those items on the “acceptable” list and help monitor the sites to ensure that others use them properly.
